The Mindful Line – Mark Making at MOWA

Tables were covered in crisp white paper. Crayons, pastels, sticks, and smooth stones waited quietly. And then—lines began.
The Mindful Line was a 60-minute guided experience held at the Museum of Wisconsin Art (MOWA), blending story, color, and motion to invite healing through mark making.

Lucy, age 8, helped prepare by offering her glittery purse full of smooth stones—passed gently from hand to hand as participants traced around them or pushed them across the page. A small gesture, a quiet spark.

With music guiding each phase—emotion in red, curiosity in yellow, memory in blue—we let our hands lead before our minds caught up. What emerged wasn’t just color. It was presence.

I was deeply blessed to be joined by a former college student and a student teacher from two decades ago. It’s strange how time reintroduces people, like familiar shades emerging from a fresh palette.
A heartfelt thank-you to Ann Marie and the team at MOWA for hosting such a reflective and healing event.
