Legacy in the Quiet Things

Daily writing prompt
What is the legacy you want to leave behind?

I used to think legacy meant a plaque.

You know—a shiny nameplate, maybe a hallway photo where I don’t look like I just sneezed. Something official. Something framed.

But after 40 years of parenting, teaching, loving, failing, forgiving, and scribbling in the margins, I’ve changed my mind.

Legacy isn’t what you leave behind.
It’s what you leave in someone.

A word that lingers.
A storm on paper.
A cup that gets used long after you’re gone.

Wobbly cups, bold glazes—ready to pour.

Imperfect Gifts

In my classroom sits a choir of hand-thrown cups—made by students, glazed in wild combinations. Some are cracked. One is a little lumpy. But together? They’re beautiful. A teapot sits in the middle. It’s never been used. It doesn’t need to be.

“You’ve already made enough.”

The lesson you shared.
The kindness you offered.
The poem you almost deleted.

What’s in your hand that someone else might need?

Storms That Sing

My kids, Henry and Lucy, once painted storms. Not landscapes—atmospheres. Rothko-esque swirls of feeling. They didn’t ask if it was “good.” They didn’t wait for approval. They picked up brushes and responded to the sky.

I asked Henry, “What’s it mean?”
He shrugged. “It’s a storm, Dad.”

Legacy is that shrug.

Not waiting for clarity—just showing up and painting what’s real.

What’s stirring in you that needs expression today?

Henry and Lucy’s storms—raw and true.

Piece by Piece

One afternoon, my wife Lindsey sent me a photo: Henry lost in a 3D puzzle—focused, quiet, fitting each piece like it was a prayer.

He wasn’t performing.
He was building.

Legacy isn’t always loud.
Sometimes it’s one small piece at a time.

A gesture.
A sentence.
A decision to stay present.

What’s one piece you can place today?

One piece at a time, a legacy builds.”

Made to Make

You were created by a Creator (Genesis 1:27).
You’ve been given everything you need (2 Peter 1:3).

Your sketch, your kindness, your awkward little offering—
That’s worship.
That’s abiding.
That’s legacy.

You don’t need a stage. You just need a start.

What’s Your Legacy?

I’m still learning to create without fear—and I’m grateful you’re here.

What’s one small thing you’ll make today?
Drop it in the comments—let’s lift each other up as fellow travelers.
